Shakti Study and Travel Retreats
Bobby offers three transformative journeys where travel becomes both study and self-discovery. Each experience includes an optional 100-hour study component and draws deeply from its sacred setting—India’s Traditional Indian Studies (Ramayana), Vietnam’s Yin Yoga and Eastern Spiritual Philosophies, and Japan’s Zen and Shinto Spiritual Practices. Though the landscapes differ, each path leads to the same destination: the realization of one universal truth. Offered in a continuing cycle, upcoming retreats are scheduled for Vietnam in 2026, Japan in 2027, and India in 2028. If you would like to bring your own group, contact Bobby@ShaktiYogaMethod.com to arrange a private study retreat for 10 or more participants.

WHAT TO BRING:
Journey Essentials

Springtime in Japan is fresh, colorful, and perfect for exploring! Expect daytime temperatures in the low 20s°C and cooler evenings dipping into the low teens, so pack layers you can add or remove easily. Bring a light raincoat, a small umbrella for your daypack, and a few extra cozy pieces for evenings out.
You’ll also want comfortable walking shoes—the kind you’ll be happy in all day—as we’ll be strolling through quiet neighborhoods, temple grounds, and bustling train stations. Much of our travel will be with locals on Japan’s famous rail system, where stairs, escalators, and scenic walks are all part of the adventure! The landscape is generally flat, but good walking fitness will make your experience more enjoyable.
Of course, don’t forget your yoga essentials—clothing suitable for practice and a travel yoga mat for our daily sessions. This retreat is for travelers who want to experience Japan beyond the bus window—to walk its streets, feel its rhythm, and be part of its daily flow. You’ll study yoga and meditation (because that’s what we do!), but also explore how Zen and Shinto philosophy live in every detail of Japanese life—from the grace of train etiquette to the quiet beauty of a garden path.
With Bobby as your guide, you’ll discover hidden gathering spots, local favorites, and the simple, profound joy woven into everyday moments in this magnificent country.

Experience Details
What Awaits
- Home Base: Our retreat home will be Omiya, a hidden Japanese gem of a city only 30 minutes from the heart of Tokyo. Though modern and convenient at first glance, Omiya retains an ancient soul. It is home to shrines dating back thousands of years and is celebrated as the heart of Japan’s bonsai culture, as well as an important stop on the ancient Nakasendo route that connected Tokyo (Edo) and Kyoto, during the Edo period.
- The Perfect Location: Omiya embodies everything that is quintessentially Japanese-art, history, spirituality, and grace-while offering a gentler pace than Tokyo’s busy streets. Its ideal location allows for effortless day trips into the capital, yet provides a peaceful setting perfect for yoga, meditation, and mindful exploration.
- Local Immersion: Our accommodations are within easy walking distance of the train station, numerous restaurants, izakayas (traditional pubs), and local shops. Throughout the retreat, you’ll have the chance to experience the full spectrum of daily Japanese life—from bustling commuter culture to neighborhood gathering spots, culinary delights, and the rhythms of ordinary city living.

- Daily Schedule: Each day will blend yoga practice with curated cultural excursions, designed to deepen your understanding of Zen and Shinto spirituality. What makes this study in Japan so captivating is how Zen and Shinto aesthetics are woven into every facet of daily life, from the simplicity of a meal, the serenity of bath culture, to the grace of a tea ceremony. Every moment becomes an opportunity to witness and embody the beauty, reverence, and mindful presence that defines Japanese culture.
- Ancient Transportation Hub: This whole area was part of an ancient travel route (Nakasendo) from Edo to Kyoto. You can still find hidden shop fronts from this time as you explore.
- Hikawa Shrine: Just a short stroll from our accommodations lies Hikawa Shrine, a sacred sanctuary that will feel like a spiritual home for our group. Founded in the 5th century, this revered shrine was made an Imperial Shrine by Emperor Meiji. Passing through Hikawa shrine’s brilliant vermilion romon gate, believed to ward off evil, you’ll immediately sense the deep serenity that fills these grounds. Despite its historical prominence, Hikawa remains a peaceful retreat where we’ll often gather to walk contemplatively beneath ancient trees, reflect on the shrine’s teachings, or sip matcha and enjoy traditional sweets at the lovely teahouse within the grounds.

- Day Trips: We will make several group trips to Tokyo, and once oriented there will be ample time for participants to explore on their own if desired.
- Mt. Fuji or Fuji San: At some point, we’ll leave the city behind and journey toward the majestic Mount Fuji, Japan’s iconic peak. Standing in its presence, you’ll feel a profound sense of arrival in Japan that only this legendary mountain can inspire. Gazing at its magical elegance rising from the landscape, is a serene and unforgettable contemplative (and photo) experience. The air feels different here, clear, crisp, and filled with reverence. It invites quiet reflection and awe. Whether bathed in morning light or framed by drifting clouds, Mount Fuji’s impossible perfection leaves an imprint on the heart, a moment that will linger long after the day is done. Begin crossing your fingers now for ideal viewing weather.
